Tej Kohli And Ruit Foundation’s Passionate Endeavour To Eliminate Blindness

“Blind eyes can perceive more than an ignorant mind.”

With over 40 million cases of blindness worldwide, only a minute portion of them have been cured. The reasons are many, from complications and severity to poor health infrastructure, and limited access. While incorrigible is one thing, needless blindness owing to lack of funds is another. No one should be blind because they don’t have the means to fight it out.

All the reasons why Mr. Tej Kohli and Dr. Sanduk Ruit have come together with a foundation to help the blind who cannot afford treatment. The foundation was founded in 2021 and is fully funded by billionaire philanthropist Mr. Tej Kohli (and his family).

Blindness has always been a hard battle to fight, yet worth the result, as is the philosophy of the foundation. The foundation is operating with a mission to screen 1 million people and cure half a million cases of blindness.

Here’s a brief of the past and ongoing projects of the foundation.

  • The foundation has set up a myriad of outreach camps in countries with a majority of poor communities, including Nepal, India, Indonesia, Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, North Korea, Afghanistan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Lebanon and Syria.
  • The foundation’s outreach camp has shown tremendous progress in the poor suburbs of Nepal. It screened 1387 patients and cured 312 cases of blindness in March 2021.
  • In April 2021, 178 patients residing near the foothills of Mt. Everest in Nepal, were cured of blindness. The same microsurgical outreach camp in Solukhumbu screened 1,214 patients.
  • Over 407 inmates of Banke District Prison were screened.
  • The foundation has also joined hands with various hospitals and institutes in Nepal to provide excellent healthcare services to the blind for their treatment. One of the hospitals that the foundation has tied up with is the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology. The institute/ hospital has completed over 732 surgeries to cure blindness. Ramlal Golchha Eye Hospital, on the other hand, has successfully completed over 1659 surgeries. Other hospitals associated with the foundation include Chhanda (Kalebabu) Narayani Eye Hospital, Fatehbal Eye Hospital, Surkhet Eye Hospital,  Shree Janaki Eye Hospital, and Geta Eye Hospital. These surgeries have been carried out under the guidance of the renowned optometrist, also known as “God of Eye”, Dr. Sanduk Ruit.

In a few months, the foundation has changed lives for the better and will continue to do so. You can help too by showing your support; you can follow Tej Kohli and Dr. Ruit foundation’s Instagram page and Twitter page. You can contribute financially to the foundation as well. Interestingly, cataract blindness is treatable and only requires a seven-minute surgery costing only USD 50.

So, what are you waiting for? You can do your bit. It’s worth the smile on the patient’s faces.
